We play every chance we get. On a good week, we fit in 5-7 sessions. I find this is often what keeps me going. Great stress relief.

--With the loss of Regina, I've taken on as much as possible to help Jake with Cody & Kaylee. I have them anywhere from 2-4 evenings and some Saturdays. I'm actually going to have them all day tomorrow while Jake puts tile down in the kitchen and does some other repairs. I'm also helping Cody with homework 2 nights a week. Huge improvements in reading and spelling over the last few weeks. Love That!!!

--Trying to teach atleast 2-3 times a week. I've been at Bryant (where Cody & Laurie are) and at Rea Woodman. Both are great schools.

--Aside from sub finder and reading your blogs, I spend very little time on the computer. By the time I'm alone and ready to blog, my arms are too tired!

--It's Football and Basketball season. Go Broncos and Shocks!

--I went to Jay's wedding. Got to see Suz. Was fun!

--I won free hotel stay in Vegas by playing poker. Hope to go by Spring.

--My poor mom is super stressed. Rick and Chris are very little help. She might sell the house. Sad!!!

--I can't wait for Tammy to move home!

--Bre and I need to get our pics ASAP!

--Looking forward to seeing Suz at Christmas.

--Hope to get to see Dawn and Jenn B too.

--Jenni and Jason went to a NE football game.

--Jen W is moving in with Chris! ooooooooo

--Jen U and Robert are moving on up to a bigger better pad.

--Laurie is excited for Dustin to move in soon.

--Trisha Girmus is excited to get married in July. Eagle

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Forget about the new guys for a minute, because intriguing as they are, they will only be as successful as the old guys allow.

That should be no problem. Delay conclusions on Wichita State's basketball season until the Shockers play real games. However, it does appear the 10 days of practice and three exhibition games confirmed that the Shockers are willing to play the kind of unselfish, ego-free basketball that carried them to the Missouri Valley Conference title and NCAA Tournament last season.

"Coach beats that into our head," WSU senior Ryan Martin said. "Guys that are back from last year, we already know what coach expects. It's just getting the new guys accustomed to how we play."

The Shockers were not always perfect in victories over Simon Fraser (87-62) and Trinity Western (92-63) on Saturday and British Columbia (72-66) on Sunday. But their eagerness to pass up mostly open shots to get a teammate a totally open one stood out. The Shockers spent a lot of time trying to make their teammates look good.

Saturday night, forward Phil Thomasson turned down a short jumper to throw crosscourt to P.J. Couisnard, who had an open three from the wing. Couisnard passed to the top of the key, and the ball made its way to the opposite wing, then inside to Thomasson, who was fouled. That was typical for the Shockers, whether it was junior Matt Braeuer or freshman Gal Mekel on the fast break, or Couisnard or Kyle Wilson reversing the ball around the perimeter. The Shockers forced some shots and got wild with some passes, but never for long periods.

"They are extremely well coached and a very disciplined team," British Columbia coach Kevin Hanson said.

That showed up even late in blowouts, when WSU coach Mark Turgeon tried to run plays for walk-ons David King and Derek Brown. Reserve guard Wendell Preadom and center Ryan Bradley got the same treatment at other times. Kyle Wilson led WSU in scoring twice, Martin once. Four other Shockers reached double figures at least once in the three games and Mekel and Preadom each topped out at nine.

WSU junior Sean Ogirri calls that attitude his favorite part of the August practice sessions.

"Everyone's unselfish," he said last week. "No one really cares who scores. Everyone's just playing as well as they can and as hard as they can. That's what made us Wichita State."

WHAT'S NEXT???

BACKCOURT
WSU coach Mark Turgeon has many options in his backcourt. Matt Braeuer looked fast and in charge and he shot well in Canada. Sean Ogirri did not shoot well, but that will not last. Karon Bradley only played one game, but he is a known quantity. Unknown quantities Gal Mekel and Wendell Preadom showed enough. Mekel is a lot like a running back who has not learned to follow his blockers. He will make fewer mistakes when he grows more patient.

FRONTCOURT
The frontcourt situation is not as settled, and that is where decisions await. The Shockers are small, and that showed up at times in Canada when they allowed opponents to rebound and score inside.
Seniors Kyle Wilson and Ryan Martin are set. They are both experienced and both play hard. Wilson's offense will be more important this season without Paul Miller around, and he should be ready. What's not to love about Martin? He hustles on every play, digs for rebounds and plays smart. Turgeon made sure to play P.J. Couisnard at the power forward spot, because he may be needed.
Junior Phil Thomasson looked comfortable in Canada, and should step in right away. However, he hasn't done it over the grind of the season. Neither has sophomore Ryan Bradley, who looked improved in Canada. This is likely where the redshirt decision comes in. How many of the three freshmen big men can help this season? Does Turgeon go with Arbry Butler, an athletic shot blocker? J.T. Durley and his inside scoring? Or Chris Brown, who can a little of everything, and is probably the best outside shooter of the group?

Music Video Codes by VideoCodeZone.com
Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05659789853130139185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139140.post-1157422981290716692006-09-04T19:14:00.000-07:002006-11-13T18:13:27.465-08:00Oh Happy Tuesday! Much of her image was fueled by a protracted legal battle over her defunct women's magazine, Rosie.
In recent years, O'Donnell has maintained a low profile, even while producing a Broadway flop, launching the cruise line, and venting about David Letterman's show others on her blog.

In a round-about way, O'Donnell has President Bush, of whom she is a vocal critic, to thank for her View appointment. If the CBS Evening News hadn't been gotten into hot water for its reporting on the President's National Guard years, anchor Dan Rather might not have been pushed to resign, Couric might not have been wooed by CBS to replace him, Vieira might not have been pursued by NBC to replace Couric, and O'Donnell might not have been asked by Walters to replace Vieira.

Funny but, Rosie owe the horrible man nothing!!!!!!!

Music Video Codes by VideoCodeZone.com
Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05659789853130139185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139140.post-1157422414907248792006-09-04T19:06:00.000-07:002006-11-13T18:13:27.332-08:00On A Lighter Note...
Football Starts this Sunday! Wichitan Larry Kloefkorn bought the last two season tickets available this season for Wichita State basketball Monday morning. He spent more than he planned, and he and his wife, Mary, will sit nine rows apart in Section 106. But he did it, providing another example of the over-the-top excitement for the Shockers.

WSU season tickets are sold out -- more than two months before the first game -- likely for the first time since the era of Antoine Carr and Cliff Levingston in the early 1980s. Koch Arena is the place to be once again in Wichita, and fans will gladly sit in the last row with an unobstructed view to be part of the yellow-and-black craziness.

Kloefkorn, 44, won't have to sit in the last row. His seats are close to the action, maybe too close for his taste. He is a big college basketball fan who watched the Shockers on TV last season. He put his name on the waiting list in March.

When WSU coach Mark Turgeon signed a 10-year extension on his contract in April -- after the Shockers' run to the NCAA Sweet 16 -- Kloefkorn decided the program's future would be worth the investment. He has lived in Wichita since 1988 and attended games on occasion. This is his first run as a season-ticket holder.

"The difference is Mark Turgeon," Kloefkorn said. "He signed an extension -- and I know those don't mean a whole lot -- but I hope it means a little something."

WSU had 40 tickets remaining Thursday, and sold 38 of those by closing time Friday. Two people on the waiting list called Monday morning and weren't interested. A third visited Koch Arena and declined.

That gave Kloefkorn his shot at two seats near center court. The seats -- Row 2, Seat 5 and Row 11, Seat 7 -- lasted until the end in large part because they require a $2,000 donation to the Shocker Athletic Scholarship Association.

The donation -- plus $439 for the two tickets -- caused Kloefkorn to reconsider, but he decided it was worth it to get in the building. He wants to be able to move his seats in future seasons.
Monday, he considered himself fortunate to be in the right spot on a waiting list that still numbers around 250.

In the WSU ticket office, assistant athletic director Megan McKenna planned to reward her staff with an ice cream party Monday afternoon. WSU officials can't be sure when or if the arena was previously sold out. The 1981-82 season -- when the Shockers averaged 10,631 fans at Levitt Arena -- is regarded as a sold-out season, but it's not known whether all season tickets were sold in advance.

This season, WSU has sold around 8,900 season tickets -- the number isn't specific because complimentary and staff tickets are still in limbo -- which leaves 1,000 for students and around 100 for athletic department use. Koch Arena's capacity is listed at 10,478, and WSU sold out 14 of its 16 home games last season.

WSU athletic director Jim Schaus and Turgeon have often talked about selling out Koch Arena. Monday, after six seasons of progress under Turgeon, Kloefkorn made it happen.
"It seems like we dreamed of this day," Schaus said. "It's another way of substantiating that our program has moved to another level. We've created an atmosphere at Koch Arena that's renowned."

McKenna said fans were happy to buy less-than-perfect seats Thursday as the available seats dwindled.

"The people who came to the arena were excited to have those seats," she said. "Even behind a pole, you can see most of the game."
<embed name='RAOCXplayer' Glider'sMom & I have had our babies for a full week now. We've grown pretty attached in that short amount of time. They are both male. Brothers actually. They are named after poker. Seeing as how it's our favorite pasttime and we got them from our super cool poker friends, it seems only fitting that the be named Ace & Jack. My mom say's Jack is only short for Jackson. Jack just fits the poker theme better. The sleep most of the day but, LOVE to play at night. They're so cute. Here's some info on Sugar Glidders. As soon as I get some pics, I'll post them.

What is a Sugar Glider?
Sugar Gliders (petarurus breviceps) are small, arboreal marsupials which originate from New Guinea and Southern Australia. As their common name entails, they possess a gliding membrane (similar to that of the flying squirrel¹s) that stretches from their wrists to their ankles and allows them to Œglide¹ from tree to tree. As with all marsupials, female sugar gliders also possess a pouch, in which they raise their young. Sugar gliders are nocturnal animals which spend almost their entire live in trees. In the wild, they live in colonies of between 6-10 gliders and spendmuch of their time foraging for food.

What do Sugar Gliders look like?
Sugar gliders grow to about 5-6 inches in length (excluding their long tails) and have long, bushy tails which they use for balance and can easily be the length of the body or longer. Their fur is usually grey/silver with white bellies and a black stripe which extends from the tops of their heads to the end of their tails. Males develop bald spots at the base of their heads after reaching maturity [1.5]. They have fairly large, pointy ears and large black eyes. Their face is similar to that of a possum¹s or a bat's.

To see what they look out visit this address.
http://www.sugar-gliders.com/sugar-glider-photos.htm

Music Video Codes by VideoCodeZone.com
Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05659789853130139185noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139140.post-1152757378532049492006-07-12T19:03:00.000-07:002006-11-13T18:13:26.580-08:00The Miracle of LifeCongrats to my friend Kim!!!

Top Stories
Firefighters, EMTs aid quick delivery
By Lisa Scheller, News Editor

Wednesday, July 12, 2006 When Kim and Pete Feyerabend bought their Chrysler Stow 'n' Go van last year, they knew it would be handy.
advertisement
But until last week, the Eudora couple didn't imagine just how handy it would be.

On the evening of July 3, three days before her due date, Kim went into labor. The couple, and their 4-year-old daughter Ashleigh, were in Basehor celebrating an early Fourth of July at the home of Pete's parents, Bob and Betty Feyerabend.

Kim had visited her doctor earlier that day. But during the afternoon and evening she had sporadic contractions, none of which were strong. Her first child had been born after a 4 1/2-hour labor, and Kim and Pete didn't expect this delivery to be much different.

Even if the baby did decide to come that evening -- sometime between the family dinner and fireworks -- they knew Basehor was a mere 25-minute drive from Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she planned to deliver.

But the best of plans can go awry. And in this case, they did. At 8 p.m. Kim's water broke. Almost immediately her contractions accelerated to a minute apart. They were strong. Kim and Pete both knew these contractions were for real.

They left Ashleigh with her grandparents and headed west on U.S. Highway 24-40. By the time they neared Tonganoxie, they knew the birth was imminent. Pete dialed 911.

Then he pulled off at Tonganoxie's Laming Road -- and swung into the first driveway on the right, thinking the water tower landmark would make it easy for an ambulance to find them.

By coincidence, the driveway into which he turned was that of the Leavenworth County Annex, which houses the county's emergency medical unit. But Pete hadn't known that.

"We had no idea," Kim said Monday.

Though they were in the right place, the ambulance was out on another call.

"About a minute later the EMS showed up, the volunteers, without the ambulance," Kim said.

At the time, Kim was still in the front passenger seat.

Pete knew there was no place to have the baby, so he rushed to lower the van's back seats, which flatten flush to the floor.

"I think I had them down in about half a minute," Pete said. "I was just kind of throwing things out of there pretty quick.

He helped Kim into the van and sat at her head as emergency workers swirled around.

"I was more or less just helping her hold her head up ... because in the back of the van we didn't have any pillows," Pete said.

And within minutes, the couple's second daughter was born. "Goodness gracious, obviously it was pretty exciting there for a while," Pete said.

"Thank goodness the EMTs or EMS, they were there so quick. That's what made it not quite so critical. They seemed to calm it down pretty well for us."

Tonganoxie Fire Chief Dave Bennett said he and other Tonganoxie firefighters had just returned from a call to check on another pregnant woman, one who didn't have her baby at that time.

"In fact, we were just getting off another pregnancy call and we hadn't even made it back to the station when we got this call," Bennett said.

Bennett responded with five firefighters and EMS official Patrick Morey.

"Contractions were a minute apart when we got there," Bennett said. "And about 20 minutes later we had a baby girl named Sydney Rose."

For Pete's parents, the evening was anxious as well. "

They got in the car and left," Better Feyerabend said. "Then, 10 minutes later the phone's ringing, he says Mom we're in Tonganoxie, we're not going to make it to the hospital."

Betty asked where they were. "He said, ‘We're under the blue water tower,'" Betty said.

Thinking they might need their help, Betty and Bob left Ashleigh with relatives and headed to Tonganoxie. "

There was all kinds of help," Betty said, adding that she and her husband decided to stay out of the way. "We sat on the back of our van."

But they soon learned everything was OK, and they even caught a fleeting glimpse of their new -- and perfectly healthy -- granddaughter bundled in a towel as she was carried to the ambulance to be taken to the hospital with Kim, who also was doing well.

That's when Bennett, and everyone else who helped with the delivery, also could breathe a little easier.

"You would think with all the experience I've had with my own children, six of my own, I wouldn't be a big sissy, but I am," Bennett said.

He expressed gratitude for the emergency workers, particularly two of them.

"Thank God for Pat Morey, though, and Jamie McCutchen,"

Bennett said. Bennett said a nurse practitioner also had stopped to help, but he didn't know her name.

Kim said she wasn't alarmed by the fact that her child was going to be born without her doctor present.

"I just knew that they were the ones that had to deliver her," Kim said. "There was no one else there and I knew the ambulance (even if it arrived soon) wasn't going to get me to the hospital in time."

Kim hadn't taken birthing classes.

"They coached me," she said of the emergency workers. "They told me to take deep breaths and try to stay calm."

And shortly afterward Sydney, who weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces and was 19 inches long, was born. But Kim said she realized that even if the ambulance had been at the annex when they arrived, it's likely her baby still would have been born not at a hospital, but "in transit," as Sydney's birth certificate reads.

Mother and daughter spent two nights at Lawrence Memorial, and everything's going fine.

"I was very happy," Kim said. "Everything went good and she's doing good."

Kim and Pete didn't know the people who delivered their baby -- including a nameless-to-them nurse practitioner who stopped to help. But, now that things have calmed down they hope to contact them.

"We'd like to send them thank you's and thank them," Kim said. "They were calm and kept me calm, they did a good job."

Music Video Codes by VideoCodeZone.com
Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05659789853130139185noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139140.post-1152676290168794122006-07-11T20:48:00.000-07:002006-11-13T18:13:26.443-08:00Israeli star guard set to play for ShockersGal Mekel, the captain of the 18-and-under national team in Israel, opts for college ball in the U.S. over a shot at playing professionally at home.
BY PAUL SUELLENTROP
The Wichita Eagle

Former Shocker Nick Rogers got his first look at future Shocker Gal Mekel when he watched the Israeli guard throw a between-the-legs bounce pass to a cutting Kyle Wilson for a layup.
"He did a lot of that," Rogers said, remembering a pickup game in June at Koch Arena. "He completed most of them. He's a pass-first player."
Mekel (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) said Friday he will attend Wichita State. He is regarded as one of the top talents in Europe and will captain Israel's 18-and-under team later this month in the European championships. WSU coach Mark Turgeon cannot comment on Mekel's commitment until he receives a signed financial aid agreement.
Mekel visited WSU and Providence in June and also had an offer to play professionally for Maccabi Tel Aviv in his hometown. He eliminated Providence last week and decided playing time at Maccabi might be limited.
"We think the best way for me to develop is in college basketball," Mekel said. "I really connected right away with (coaches) Mark and Scott (Spinelli)." He also connected with the university and city. He's a little nervous about moving a 19-hour flight from home, but he feels good about Wichita.
"To leave the family, it will be very tough for me," he said. "But you have to sacrifice things to make your dream and develop. I need to do this. If all the people in Wichita take care of me and welcome me, it will be easy to leave home."
Mekel visited Wichita with his father, Alon, and both liked the city and his future teammates. They believe it's the best atmosphere for Mekel to develop his skills. "He is very, very focused and very, very hard working," Alon Mekel said. "Wichita and Providence are two totally different places. Gal liked the way of life. Wichita is more quiet."
Rogers, a senior on last season's WSU team, said Shocker fans will enjoy Mekel. He describes him as similar to NBA star Steve Nash, while also hesitating to start the hype on Mekel after watching a few pickup games. Nash or not, Rogers said Mekel is talented, smart and confident. He dribbles well, loves to pass and does it all on offense. Rogers was so enthralled by his ball skills, he didn't pay much attention to Mekel's defense.
Turgeon might tone down Mekel's flashy passes, but Rogers said the passes usually work.
"He likes to have the ball in his hands," Rogers said. "He's unselfish. He won't be the quickest guard we have, but he always found a way to get his shot off. He always found a way to get all the way to the basket."
Mekel wants his college experience to prepare him to become the first Israeli in the NBA. Or it could prepare him for a return to Israel and a contract with Maccabi.
It wouldn't be unusual for a European player to spend a season or two in the NCAA, then return home to play professionally. WSU dipped into the foreign pool in 2001, when it signed center Sasha Mijajlovic, a Yugoslavian from Hutchinson Community College. Mijajlovic returned home during the summer and never played for WSU.
Mekel said he has no plans for how long his stay at WSU might last. "I don't want to look far from this point of time," he said. "I want to get better."
Mekel said playing basketball at an American university will allow him to delay the military service required of Israelis after the age of 18.
Mekel attracted a lot of attention with his play in the Albert Schweitzer under-18 tournament in Germany this spring. He scored 31 points with five assists (and eight turnovers) against Spain and 29 points with six assists against the United States. He averaged 17.2 points in the tournament. He will play for the Israeli team in the European championships beginning July 18 in Greece. He said he has been invited to the Adidas SuperStar Camp in Berlin in August, then plans to come to Wichita.
Mekel cannot sign a letter of intent because the NCAA signing period is over. Mekel's commitment reserves WSU's 13th and final scholarship.

Music Video Codes by VideoCodeZone.com
Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05659789853130139185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139140.post-1152636432243019662006-07-11T09:26:00.000-07:002006-11-13T18:13:26.349-08:00I got this in an e-mail from JBRather than fill people's e-mail with my boring information, thought I'd share this with you all here. I promised to post some pictures when I got them. Well, for some reason I could never get them to post. Anyway, here's one Tammy took of her about 3 weeks ago. Isn't she adorable? She looks a lot like her brother. I always thought he would have made a pretty girl. Looks like I was right. Hopefully I'll have better luck with her second birthday party pictures.

Music Video Codes by VideoCodeZone.com
Ginahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05659789853130139185noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8139140.post-1151172669812946552006-06-24T10:13:00.000-07:002006-11-13T18:13:26.124-08:00Everything Happens For A Reason...True or False? Do you believe everything happens for a reason? I've spent the last several days thinking about this post. What to say. How to explain the happenings of the last 12 days. How to write what needs to be written. So here we go.

7am on Wednesday June 14th, 2006
Check in at St. Francis to get PICC line IV going. By 8:15am the IV team shows up & is ready to go to work. I have horrible veins so this is a normal thing for me to need before surgery. After surveying my right arm the IV team of one man & one woman along with the help a doppler machine choose a site to begin working on my IV. Due to the length of the events that took place over the next 2.5 hours, I'm going to sum up my IV experience by saying after all that time and 12 needle sticks later we were still without an IV.

About 11am
They send to the 3rd floor to wait to go to Pre-Op. This is the part of the process where the re ask you all of the questions they asked you during the pre admit phone call that takes about an hour. Family History, Past Illness, allergies, Medications & so on...

Somewhere between 12:00am & 1:00pm
It's time for me to go to Pre-OP where they are going to go over all of the above again as well as hopefully get a central line in to use as the IV site. As my cart is being rolled away I begin to feel very nervous. Very unsure of this decision to have surgery. After about 5 mins or so the anesthetist came in. After looking me over, he tells me he needs to insert the breathing tube while I'm still awake. He explains how this is the only safe way to put me under anesthetia due to my MD. I have a small mouth and getting the tube down with all of those muscles under anesthetia would make inserting the tube too difficult. Not having an airway while that deeply asleep is very dangerous. Although I think this sounds horrible, I'm going to suck it up & go through with it. After we continue to visit, the anesthetist goes on to tell me I may need to remain on the ventilator for a few hours or a few days after the surgery. As you can imagine. I freaked out! That was the end of the road for me. There's no way! Imagine waking up. No glasses on. You can't move any part of your body. You can't talk. You can't reach the nurses button BUT, you need something. You feels rushes of pain and anxiety rush through your whole body. As you know, often times it's hard to people with weak lungs to get off Vents that are used for very long. Scary.

Needless to say, I didn't go through with the surgery. For me the risks were far higher that I was willing to go for. What good does a pain free hip do me if I can't breathe on my own. The next day or so I doubted my decision. Now I know I made the right decision. Here's why...

Charlie Cotton
Cotton, Charlie, 73, retired Aerospace Materials employee, died June 16, 2006.
